The Tulsa County Bar Association held its 27th Annual Free CLE Seminar late last week, and the Fry & Elder presence at the event was strong.
Fry & Elder immigration law attorney Lorena Rivas held the featured speaking position – 1:00-1:50 p.m. – and her presentation “Mythbusters: Dispelling the Myths in Immigration Law” was well received by attorneys and legal personnel throughout the Tulsa area.
The accomplished immigration attorney dispelled 10 myths in regards to Oklahoma immigration law including:
- A foreigner who is lawfully in the U.S. doesn’t have to worry about their immigration status
- Deferred sentences and expungements are never seen by immigration officials
- Someone who has been living in the U.S. for many years and has been U.S. citizen children can’t be removed
- An employer can easily petition for someone to be able to remain in the U.S.
“I chose this topic to try to clarify some questions attorneys and people may have about immigration law, especially now because immigration is such a hot topic in the current presidential administration and political climate,” Rivas said.
Rivas has become authority figure in Oklahoma immigration law and her Fry & Elder immigration law practice is flourishing.
Earlier this month, Rivas traveled to Washington D.C. to take part in the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s National Day of Action. Rivas was there to advocate for immigration law reform in the U.S., and had a personal meeting with U.S. Representative Tom Cole. She also spoke to U.S. Senators James Inhofe and James Lankford, along with U.S. Representatives Frank Lucas, Markwayne Mullin and James Bridenstine.
